Welcome to website of the Bow Valley Sustainability Hub. Established in 2006, the Hub is dedicated to creating and supporting a culture of sustainability in the Bow Valley.
The Hub is a legacy of The
Natural Step to a Sustainable Canmore, a two-year program in which the Town of Canmore and other local organizations and businesses learned the principles of sustainability and developed sustainability action plans. At the end of The Natural Step program, the participants chose to create the Bow Valley Sustainability Hub as a means to engage the greater Bow Valley community in taking steps towards a sustainable future.

What is Sustainability?
There are many different definitions of sustainability, but the most widely used comes from a 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development report entitled Our Common Future (also commonly referred to as the Brundtland Report). The definition offered by the report’s authors is:
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

The Natural Step
The work of the Bow Valley Sustainability Hub is rooted in the principles of The Natural Step, an international, award-winning approach to sustainability that was founded in Sweden in the late 1980’s. The Natural Step provides an understanding of sustainability based on four conditions that society needs to meet to become sustainable, and a clearly-defined program for how individuals, organizations, and governments can move toward meeting those conditions.
The mission of The Natural Step is to act as a catalyst for social change. It does so by making the fundamental principles of sustainability easier to understand, and sustainability initiatives easier to develop and implement.
