Take Action!

As part of the Sustainable Action Canmore program we are encouraging residents to commit to at least one of the following actions:

Save Electricity: Replace an incandescent bulb with an energy efficient light bulb.

A curly compact fluorescent light bulb uses 70% less energy than an ordinary bulb, lasts 10x longer, and will save you $30.00 - $35.00 over the life of the bulb. It will also keep a half-tonne of CO2 out of the atmosphere.

Save Water: Replace your old showerhead with a low-flow showerhead.

A 10-minute shower can use up to 190 litres (42 gallons) of hot water with a conventional showerhead. A low-flow showerhead can reduce this by half or even more, without sacrificing the "feel" of the shower.

Reduce Transportation Impacts: Check your tire pressure at least once a month.

Improper inflation reduces tire lifespan, increases fuel consumption, and reduces vehicle safety. In Canada, 2/3 of vehicles have at least one tire that is improperly inflated and 1/3 have 3 or 4 tires that are improperly inflated.  1.5 million tonnes of CO2 are released into the environment annually in Canada due to improper tire pressure.

Reduce Waste: Use a cloth bag for shopping.

Each year across the world some 500 billion plastic bags are used, and only a tiny fraction of them are recycled. Most of them will have a short lifetime with a consumer -- they'll be used for the few minutes it takes to get from the store to home and then they're thrown away.  They can last up to a thousand years in a landfill. In the environment, they break down into tiny, toxic particles that become part of the soil and water.
