History and Mission
The Sustainability Hub evolved out of The Natural Step to a Sustainable Canmore, an international non-profit training program that engaged the Town of Canmore and seven local "Early Adopter" organizations over a period of almost two years. As part of their commitment to the program, the 40 Early Adopter participants were trained in The Natural Step Framework, developed sustainability action plans for their own organizations, and then worked together to share what they had learned with the rest of the community. To meet the latter commitment, the Early Adopters hosted a Bow Valley Sustainability Forum and Energy Fair in October 2005, and created the Bow Valley Sustainability Hub.
Under the motto of "Working Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow," the Hub opened its doors in July, 2006. Run as a program of the Biosphere Institute, the Hub is dedicated to creating and supporting a culture of sustainability in the Bow Valley. To achieve its mandate, the Hub:
- provides education, training and outreach to individuals, businesses, organizations and municipalities interested in sustainability;
- is a one-stop clearing house for sustainability news, resources and information;
- supports sustainability projects through collaborative planning, access to resources, and public education and outreach; and
- shares its resources and growing knowledge with other communities in Alberta, Canada and abroad.
