Humans & Wildlife

The Bow Valley is a popular place for people to live, visit, and recreate.  However it is also home to cougars, bears, wolves, elk, and other wildlife.  Co-existance for humans and wildlife in the valley can be challenging for both and it is important to minimize conflicts and incidents between the two.

There are a number of initiatives underway to manage the interaction between humans and wildlife.  These include:

  • Highway fencing and crossing structures
  • Wildlife corridors and habitat patches
  • Redesign of the trail network, and area closures
  • Bear-proof garbage bins
  • Restrictions on animal attractants such as bird feeders and outdoor food composting
  • Education and awareness programs
