Worm Composting

Worm composting (or "vermicomposting") is a great way to turn some of your kitchen scraps into high quality compost.  Outdoor food composting is prohibited in Canmore and Banff because the odours can attract bears.  It's also a great way to compost anywhere there are wildlife concerns.  Using a worm composting bin is a simple and easy to use option.  The "Red Wriggler" composting worms can eat up to half their own weight in compost a day.  Don't worry! The bins do not smell, and the worms do not “escape” from the bin.

Commercial worm composters are available, but it is very easy to construct your own from a plastic bin and some shredded newspaper.   Marie-Pierre Chappeland has written an excellent guide to worm composting.

Organics Composting in Banff

In the summer of 2007 the Town of Banff and the Bow Valley Waste Management Commission began a trial program of a new organics composting process.  Residents are encouraged to deposit their food waste in one of the organics collection bins that have been placed at recycling locations in Banff (no plastic bags or other objects in the bins please!).  Canmore and the M.D. of Bighorn do not currently have a similar program.
