Field Notes: April/May 2026

Regardless of the snow squalls and cooler temperatures, Springtime in the Rockies marches on! Calypso Orchids (pictured) are cropping up in mossy fringes and meadows.

Despite her delicate beauty and enticing colours, this dainty flower, also known as a Fairy Slipper, produces no nectar. Instead, she attracts early bumblebees and pollinators with a sweet vanilla scent in exchange for them transporting pollen. A deceitful bloom!

The burst of heat from the sun also means other plants such as Prairie Smoke, Crocus and Clematis are blossoming. The birds show no sign of slowing their dawn song and the wildlife (including students!) are exploding with energy.

Here’s a collection of stories and resources to support you in connecting your lessons to the environment.

Stories from the Field

April 22nd Earth Day

Together with the Grade 2 and 5 classes at École Notre-Dame des Monts as well as the Into the Wild program in Banff, we successfully diverted 30lbs of scrap paper from the recycling stream by making our own paper!

We also added wildflower seeds to the paper. Some of the students chose to gift their paper while others put it under dirt for sprouting!

May 7-9: Outdoor Learning Conference, Banff AB

Îsniyes to Carlene and Tracey for sharing their Îyethka stories and perspectives at the Outdoor Learning Conference. Together with Heidi, we presented to over 40 educators from across Canada about the Ways of Bison program and how we engage a two-eyed seeing perspective to teach students how the Bison is both a cultural and ecological keystone species.

May 19th: Ways of the Bison program at Star 6 Ranch

Grade 4 students from Nakoda Elementary School and École Notre-Dame des Monts met one another and shared in a day of learning from Stoney Nakoda Elders, Parks Canada and the land at Star 6 Ranch. Îsniyes to Cassandra Poucette, Tracey Stevens and Duane Mark for sharing their stories.

We’d also like to thank Star 6 Ranch for hosting us, Parks Canada for sharing about the Banff National Park Bison reintroduction and NSERC for funding this project.

If you’d like to host a lesson about Bison or be involved in the 2027 Ways of the Bison program, please send Heidi an email with your grade and the desired curriculum you’d like integrated (e.g. Grade 9 Biological Diversity).

April - June: Wildlife Safety & Bear Spray Training

We continue to offer our invaluable wildlife safety programs. Prepare students and staff with information on how to avoid and handle wildlife encounters with helpful tips and practical bear spray training (Grade 7 and up).

The wildlife safety programs are delivered at no-cost to local schools in the Bow Valley. For additional bear spray training, we charge a $25 fee for each can of inert bear spray (typically works for 2-3 students per can). Email Heidi to request a wildlife safety program.

Every Thursday: Future Leaders Youth Council

Do you know a student in Grade 8-12 who is passionate about climate change, the environment and change?

We have a group of passionate students who meet after school and are always keen for new members. Meetings in Canmore at the Biosphere Institute office are 4:30-6pm on the first and third Thursday of the month. Meetings in Banff at the Banff Public Library are 4:30-6pm on the first and third Thursday of the month. Email jackie@biosphereinstitute.org for more information.

ReUse Bow Valley

Check out this new initiative by the Biosphere Institute and partners! ReUse Bow Valley is a community group on Facebook dedicated to sharing, reusing, and redistributing materials from construction, renovation, and demolition projects. Members can post items to give away, trade, or request—helping keep useful materials out of the landfill and supporting a more circular economy in the Bow Valley. Household items that can be reused are also welcome.

Field Notes: March 2026

With the recent snow fall in the Bow Valley, it is hard to imaging the Prairie Crocus (purple flower in photo) lying dormant under the snow.

Don’t be fooled! This harbinger of spring (actually a buttercup, not a crocus at all) is ready to flaunt its fuzzy coat and remind us of the warmth on the way.

Did you know? The Prairie Crocus has a specially evolved globe-shaped bloom with silvery reflective petals to capture and focus the sun’s warmth, raising the temperature in the centre of the flower up to 10°C warmer than the surrounding air temperature! This adaptation makes it the perfect B&B for early season pollinators.

Spring Programs

April 22nd: Earth Day, making seed paper for planting

As an Earth Day action project, I’m excited to share that K-7 students will be mulching up their classroom’s scrap paper, adding native wildflower seed approved by the Town of Canmore and allowing it to dry in paper screens. Watch this video for inspiration. Not only will we divert paper from the waste stream, we will be sending students home with seed paper to start their own wildflower gardens of yarrow, clover, vetch and more. To request this program, please email Heidi.

May 19th: Ways of the Bison program at Star 6 Ranch

This education program about the ecology and culture of the Bison is entering its 4th year. Grade 4 students from Nakoda Elementary School and École Notre-Dame des Monts will meet one another and share in a day of learning from Stoney Nakoda Elders, Parks Canada and one another.

The 2026 program at Star 6 Ranch is full. However, if you’d like to host a lesson about Bison or be involved in the 2027 program, please send me an email with your grade and the desired curriculum you’d like integrated (e.g. Grade 9 Biological Diversity).

May-June: Pollinator Garden at École Notre-Dame des Monts

Volunteers needed! If you’d like to help us with turning soil, watering and planting the small pollinator garden at NDM, please be in touch!

April-June: Wildlife Safety & Bear Spray Training

With Spring on its way, Bears will be emerging from hibernation and hungry for easy food, often in residential areas. Springtime also brings along calving for Elk and we can expect to see defensive behaviour, particularly from new mother cow Elk.

Our longstanding wildlife safety programs help prepare students to stay safe with helpful tips and practical bear spray training (Grade 7 and up). We also offer wildlife safety training for teachers and staff upon request.

The wildlife safety programs are delivered at low or no-cost to local schools in the Bow Valley with a $25 fee for each can of inert bear spray (typically works for 2-3 students per can). Email Heidi to request a wildlife safety program.

Welcome to Field Notes!

Field Notes

Connecting your lessons to local environmental events and resources.

Brought to you by the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley

Ahhh fall. The smell of crisp leaves in the school yard, the feeling of cool air on our cheeks, and, of course, the sound of sniffling noses echoing in the hallways. If you were able to avoid the unavoidable back to school sickness, kudos to you. What’s your secret?!

While I do not (yet) hold a magical cure for back-to-school sickness, I do hold some pretty great resources to help your classroom thrive.

This newsletter was created to share resources to educators across, and beyond, the Bow Valley. It’s low commitment, which means I will only be sending out emails when there are events and resources to be shared, I promise I won’t start spamming you. This newsletter also means that if you have a relevant event or resource that you would like shared, please email me and I’ll do my best to include it in the next issue. education@biosphereinstitute.org

Let’s begin!

On October 16th, before the trip takes place, participants will have the opportunity to attend a workshop by Glaciologist Peter Wray. Afterwards, on November 13th, participants may attend a workshop by local Sculptor Alva Gallagher to explore the artistic world of preserving nature and out memories. In the News

Teachers demand the government invest in our most unlimited resource, our children’s future.

After a back and forth with the provincial government, the Teachers Association of Alberta (ATA) stood their ground and voted NO to the Alberta government’s most recent offer. 51,000 teachers are demanding manageable classroom sizes, higher wages, additional supports in the class, and more. The Biosphere stands proudly behind these hardworking professionals and is happy to do what we can to support. Learn more about the Alberta Teachers Association here.
